Ionizing Radiations Laboratory

The ”Ionizing Radiations” laboratory manages – undertakes, preserves and disseminates through modern equipment the measurement units of air kerma, air kerma rate, the exposure dose/exposure dose rate, dose equivalent/dose equivalent rate.

The mentioned measurement units are essential for the protection dosimetry area, industry, medicine, environment, national safety and security.

Main objectives of the laboratory are:

  • Assurance of uniformity, accuracy and traceability of measurements on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
  • Management, maintenance, storage, preservance of measurement standards and of the equipment owned by the laboratory.
  • Creation, research and development of the National Measurement Standards Base and of the equipment owned by the laboratory.
  • Dissemination of the measurement unit by development of calibration procedures based on best international practices.
  • Participation in international comparisons for demonstration of the equivallence of the measurement unit realized in the Republic of Moldova with the one preserved by international measurement standards.
  • Promotion of new technologies of measurement, calibration, verification, as well as of measurement standards, reference materials and modern measurement equipment and their implementation in the national economy.
  • Maintenance and continuous improvement of the quality management in the laboratory.

National and reference measurement standards

The ”Ionizing Radiations” Laboratory owns:

1. National measurement standard of air kerma and air kerma rate, used for undertaking air kerma and air kerma rate unit, preserving and disseminating it to reference measurement standards and, through them, to all measurement standards and measuring instruments for the assurance of uniformity, accuracy and legacy of measurements performed in the Republic of Moldova, including for economic and technical-scientific relations with other states;

The measurement standard is traceable to IAEA – International Atomic Energy Agency

The calibrations within the laboratory are performed in line with the requirements of SM SR EN ISO/CEI 17025.

The laboratory provides trainings that focus on conducting correct measurements and determination of their conventional values by the application of correction factor and use of measurement uncertainty, as well as by experience exchange through internships. The trainings are provided on all subfields of the ”Ionizing Radiations” Laboratory.

Laboratorul Radiații Ionizante oferă, de asemenea, servicii de verificare metrologică pentru domeniile sus menționate.

The laboratory performs also activities like:

  • Conducting research in the ionizing radiations area;
  • Storage, reproduction and dissemination of measuring units from national and reference measurement standards to other measurement standards and instruments according to the ierarchic scheme.
  • Participation in comparison of reference measurement standards of RM with the international ones for assuring the uniformity of measurements.
  • Maintenance and continuous improvement of the quality management system of the laboratory.
